Sir:-
I hove the honour to inform you that Mr. Mans-
field, Her Majesty's Consul at Canton nas written to
me a despatch covering a copy of his despaton to
yourself of June 10th. in regard to the status of
Britisa Companies registered in Hongkong but promoted
by Chinese subjects with the object of taking over
their business and conducting the same under Britisn
protection.
Mr.Mansfield wishes me to state my opinion as
to the attitude to be taken by Her Majesty's Consuls
in relation to suen Companies when carrying on busi-
ness in China.
I have the honour to advise as follows:-
Py Section Vi of the Hongkong Companies Ordinance
No.1 of 1865, founded on the Companies Act 1802, 25
and 26 Vic. Cap.89, it is enacted fast.
